# Archie AI

> Archie AI lets the apps you build call AI models through your project's API. You turn it on per environment, choose providers and default models, set a spend cap, and test prompts in a playground.

**Archie AI** is a [Core Service](https://archie.com/docs/backend/app-services.md) that lets your apps call chat and embedding models through your project's API. Archie manages the provider keys and bills usage as AI credits.

## Turn Archie AI on

Archie AI is off until you activate it, and it's configured per [environment](https://archie.com/docs/backend/environments.md).

1. Go to **Backend → Core Services → Archie AI**.
2. Turn on the **Activate Archie AI** switch.

While it's off, the page shows an **Inactive** badge and the message "Archie AI is not active in this environment. Turn it on to configure it."

![The Archie AI page showing the Inactive badge and the Activate Archie AI switch turned off.](https://mintcdn.com/archie-e998dbf6/FcInvfd50seksJIy/images/23-archie-ai-inactive.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=FcInvfd50seksJIy\&q=85\&s=07a9cf32de475e1a28dae3f64385b5ea)

Once it's active, the badge changes to **Active** and five tabs appear:

| Tab | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Providers** | Enable the AI providers your apps can use. See [Providers and default models](https://archie.com/docs/backend/app-services/archie-ai/providers-and-models.md). |
| **Default models** | Choose the chat and embedding models used when an app doesn't name one. |
| **Limits & usage** | Cap spending and review what the environment consumed. See [Limits and usage](https://archie.com/docs/backend/app-services/archie-ai/limits-and-usage.md). |
| **Expose to apps** | See the operations your apps can call. See [Expose to apps and playground](https://archie.com/docs/backend/app-services/archie-ai/expose-and-playground.md). |
| **Playground** | Send a test prompt to a model. |

To turn Archie AI off, switch **Activate Archie AI** back off.

## FAQ

> **Is Archie AI shared across environments?**
>
> No. Activation and configuration apply to the environment you have selected in the Backend Console.

> **Who pays for model usage?**
>
> By default, Archie manages the provider keys and bills usage as AI credits. Bringing your own key is marked **Enterprise** in the console. See [Providers and default models](https://archie.com/docs/backend/app-services/archie-ai/providers-and-models.md).
