# Archie vs. Replit: which should you use to build an app?

> Archie vs. Replit Agent compared: planning, scope, backend, deployment, pricing model, and when to choose each for building an app.

**Replit and Archie can both take you from a natural-language description to a deployed app, but they're different kinds of tools.** Replit is a general-purpose cloud development platform with an AI agent: it can build web apps, mobile apps, scripts, and more in a full cloud workspace. Archie is focused on production web applications and works definition-first — it generates a plan of the whole app that you shape before any code is written, then builds the frontend and backend from it.

## At a glance

| | Archie | Replit |
| - | - | - |
| **What it is** | An AI app builder for production web apps | A cloud development platform with an AI agent |
| **Scope** | Full-stack web applications | Web apps, mobile apps, scripts, and more |
| **Planning** | A lasting [plan](/docs/features/plan/overview) of the whole app that every build follows | Plan mode for mapping out work before code changes |
| **Backend** | [Archie Core](/docs/features/backend/overview): PostgreSQL or MySQL, GraphQL and REST APIs, auth, role-based access | Built-in database; you design the backend with the agent |
| **Environments** | Git-like [environments](/docs/features/backend/environments/overview) with branching, schema diff, merge, and backups | Workspace and deployment types you configure |
| **Hosting** | Frontend on a global CDN, backend on Archie Core | Replit deployments (autoscale, reserved VM, static, scheduled) |
| **Pricing model** | AI credits weighted by task complexity, cost shown before heavier tasks | Effort-based agent billing plus usage-based deployments |
| **Free plan** | 50 AI credits per month | Starter with a limited agent allowance |

## How each one works

**Replit** gives you a full cloud workspace — editor, terminal, database, and deployments — with Replit Agent to build from natural language. Plan mode lets you work out an approach before the agent changes code. It's flexible: you can build almost anything, and you make the architecture, hosting, and infrastructure choices along the way.

**Archie** is opinionated. Your prompt becomes a [plan](/docs/features/plan/overview) with overview, modules, user types, system services, and integrations. **Generate Frontend** lays out every screen in a [UI architecture](/docs/features/frontend/generating) and builds a click-through prototype, **Generate Backend** builds the schema and APIs on [Archie Core](/docs/features/backend/overview), and **Generate Full-Stack** deploys the app. The architecture and infrastructure decisions are made for you, following the plan. See [How Archie works](/docs/introduction/getting-started/welcome#how-archie-works).

## Key differences

### General-purpose vs. focused

Replit's strength is range: one workspace for many kinds of projects, with full control over the stack. Archie's strength is focus: one structured path from idea to a production web app, with the architecture defined by the plan and the infrastructure provided by Archie Core.

### Planning the whole app first

Replit's Plan mode helps you scope work before a change. Archie's plan is the definition of the whole app — users, roles, modules, services — and it stays with the project. Every screen in the UI architecture has its own spec and access level, and the backend's data model and permissions come from the same plan. See [The plan and how Archie works](/docs/faq/the-plan).

### A production backend out of the box

Archie Core includes a relational database with a visual [data model](/docs/features/backend/data-model/overview), auto-generated [GraphQL](/docs/features/backend/graphql-api-explorer/overview) and [REST](/docs/features/backend/rest-api-explorer/overview) APIs, [authentication](/docs/features/backend/app-services/authentication-providers/overview), [role-based access](/docs/features/backend/app-services/role-based-access) with [row-level filters](/docs/features/backend/app-services/row-level-filters), [webhooks](/docs/features/backend/rest-api-explorer/webhooks), [queues and an event bus](/docs/features/backend/app-services/queues-and-event-bus/overview), [scheduled tasks](/docs/features/backend/scheduled-tasks/overview), and Git-like [environments](/docs/features/backend/environments/overview). You don't assemble these pieces — they're there when the backend is generated.

### Pricing model

Replit bills agent work by effort, per checkpoint, and bills deployments, compute, and storage by usage on top of the plan's included credits. Archie uses [AI credits](/docs/introduction/getting-started/plans-and-credits#ai-credits) for AI-assisted building, weighted by task complexity, with the cost of heavier tasks shown before they run. Hosting runs on an included [Archie Core backend tier](/docs/introduction/getting-started/plans-and-credits#archie-core-backends).

## When to choose Replit

* You want a general-purpose cloud workspace for many kinds of projects, not just web apps.
* You want full control over the stack, hosting type, and infrastructure.
* You're learning to code or exploring ideas in a full development environment.

## When to choose Archie

* You want a structured path from idea to a production web app, with the architecture decided for you.
* You want the whole app defined — users, roles, modules, data — before code is written.
* You need a relational backend with APIs, row-level permissions, and environments without setting them up yourself.

## FAQ

### Is Archie a Replit alternative?

For building production web apps, yes. Replit is broader — a general-purpose cloud development platform — while Archie focuses on taking a web app from idea to production with a plan-first workflow and an included backend.

### Do I need to know how to code to use Archie?

No. You describe the app, shape the plan, and Archie builds it. Technical users can still open the code editor or sync with GitHub. See [Do I need to know how to code?](/docs/faq/getting-started#do-i-need-to-know-how-to-code-to-use-archie)

### Can I build mobile apps with Archie?

Archie generates responsive web applications that work on phones, tablets, and desktops. Native iOS and Android apps are not available yet. See [Can I build a mobile app with Archie?](/docs/faq/building#can-i-build-a-mobile-app-with-archie)

### How does hosting work in Archie?

Your frontend is hosted on a global CDN and your backend runs on Archie Core, with one-click publishing and custom domains. See [Deployment](/docs/features/frontend/deployment).
